In reading Sellers' blog posts on his mortising technique he states that he was taught to use a bevel edged chisel to chop mortises during his apprenticeship and that using such a chisel was a standard shop practice in the shop he apprenticed in.

Given the general nature of apprenticeships, he appears to have come by the technique honestly.
