It costs a lot to apply grits to paper. When the paper grits wear out new expensive paper is required. Alternatively if the worn grits can be replaced by sprinkling some fresh cheap grits on some substrate the cost is much less.
In the case of diamonds the cost of the diamond is cents per caret as the powder and dollars a caret when bought already applied to a film of metal plate.
