Heavy oval bolster mortise chisels since 1670? Here are Felibien 1676, moxon 1703, Diderot 1769, Nicholson, 1812. I don't see them as being as heavy as 20th or 21st century pigstickers.
"ultimate bashing, heavy duty use, et c. To me this does not sound like cabinetmaking. "
It is if you are trying to make a living at it. When you get paid piecework at set wages (or less) you learn to work fast. Mayhews interviews with cabinetmakers in the mid-19th century include the cost of replacing tools as they wore out.
A few years ago you suggested on this forum that in 1811 a London cabinetmaker could make a small drawer in two hours, but that it might take today's woodworker 8 hours to do by hand. I then made a drawer from rough lumber, glued and sides flushed up in 1 hour 57 minutes. It is faster in batches. Perhaps I should be the one telling about working fast. Finesse is much more helpful than bashing.
