Bill, based on the articles I've read this afternoon, you're right, but I'm still confused. The problem in that section is, I'm convinced, reaction wood. My confusion arises from one article, from the U of Florida which says that reaction in conifers is compression, and tension in hardwoods. Maybe that makes sense, since the problem was across the grain, but I don't really get because I can't visualize where that board was in the tree.
