>On the settings stuff. Can anyone tell me what the chip breaker setting is when one is working over 10 thou shavings, sometimes a lot over. And can anyone tell me what the setting is for say 3/10 000" setting? I'm not sure I have the memo on this part, are we sorta saying same thinckness as shaving sought? So that would be a 3/10 000" setting which is pretty sporty.
My scrub plane is an old coffin smoother. massive thick blade with a deep crown to the edge, wide mouth. the chipbreaker is pulled back a lot- it might as well not have one. purpose made scrubs don't. it leaves tear out, lots of it- but it's a scrub.
on the 3/10 shaving- I generally set up a plane for a particular kind of work and leave it at that. if I wanted to take a 3/10 shaving first I'd try with my best smoother and fettle from there. I've never needed a shaving that fine. there would be some satisfaction from getting a full width, full length 3/10 shaving, but for me there is no practical need.
I do think that a 3/10 setting on a chipbreaker is unlikely to work well. you'd need a pretty good microscope just to get there, anyhow.
