We do agree on the merits of the LV chisel. Somewhere in the mix of metals tested by LV is CPM 3V. I would guess it is metal W, from the scoring, presuming the sample they used was optimally hardened which would leave it hard and tough. I think the chisel test will predict real world performance, so as I said at first I think they will have the best performing Western chisel in the market. And they fabricated it the way most people would want it. If I was selling A2 chisels I would be looking for another way to make money. The LV chisel would be my choice if I wasn't too cheap to buy one. But WOW what a set of these chisels will cost!

I remain skeptical that this steel will turn out any better than A2 for a plane blade because I think the sharpening test is a better predictor of plane blade performance than the test they chose to reveal data from. If the new steel was significantly better at planing wood they would be providing data of real world planing for A2 vs the LV steel. It would not take many feet of wood to reveal a significant difference if one was to be found.
