We share theories on golf clubs. I do have a newerish driver, but it is 4 generations old now, and I got it cheap.

My irons are mizuno mx 23s, and they are forged, but I don't care that much about that. I cared about them not having much offset and being cheap (they were about $150 used).

I also don't go out and buy expensive balls made to be compressed by 120 mile an hour swings, either, because no matter how many years I swing a golf club, I'm 20 miles an hour short of that on a good day.

Repeating the same swing and following the hogan principles (as I am a lifetime hook fighter) is plenty entertainment and challenge enough. I do see a LOT of brand new clubs at the range, though, with guys who should've spent their time and money figuring out how to not do the same things 20 handicappers have done for the last 75 years.
