Interesting that one of our fav companies is introducing the "New and
Better" steel for tools. I really don't think I need it... I understand
their needs. A recreational woodworker will not use up a chisel or plane
iron in his lifetime. Oops... they want us to buy stuff. How do they make
that happen? Convince us that they now have something "better" than we
have. OK... maybe they do.. Does that really matter to me? Don't think
so. My Hock irons are much better tools than I am a craftsman. Easy to
hone. Retain an edge nicely. I can get hardwood so slick that a fly has
trouble landing on it. If you really want the brutal truth.... the old
Stanley irons in my metal planes were quite adequate for my work. Not gonna
go the "upgrade route" this time.... I do not deny that the new metal
may be "better". For me, I think it is a distinction that makes no
difference.
