Yeah pushing is bad because the hook effect is wrong. An anchor self sets, but if you take the hook part off you need a lot of weight to hold it down. A Japanese type plane self-sets, a push plane needs to be held down. It really isn't push vs pull, it is hook vs no hook.
Was using my infill block plane to cut a scarf joint tonight, and it is awesome.
