I emailed Bill the other day to apologize for the things I was thinking when he originally brought up the topic of cap irons. I had no idea where he was going with it.
When I emailed him I was in the middle of planing some pretty mild walnut... but with the properly tuned cap iron I was planing against the grain, over crotch grain, etc, and the results were all the same: excellent. So, I'm convinced, as are many others, obviously. The ability to plane without having to pay as much attention to grain direction and figure will enable me to plane more surfaces, instead of relying on sanders, which I'm excited about.
Being able to plane more easily, without having to sharpen as often would be a real game-changer for me.
