Hand Tools Archive

I've been digging into this for four or five years. Some here might say it's for the sake of argument but it's not even though I've been ridiculed and dismissed here for suggesting it's not abrasion that dulls tools. The information is useful to us. Just one example is that I've been able to significantly increase tool life in our metal shop by just modifying the application of coolant.
I'm not sure what tribology text Bill read but I've been through several of them and tried to read everything I can find on the Internet on the topic unless involved subscribing to academic journals which almost always involves more than $10,000. Sometimes a lot more.
Here are some simple generalizations I've been working with:
1. Abrasion involves wearing away of a surface by particles harder than the surface being worn.
2. Corrosion involves volumetric increase of the surface being corroded.
3. Heat is definitely a cause or contributing factor in edge wear and heat has little effect on abrasion.
Here are some quotes from one of those the many articles I have stored on my computer. This is one from people working on adhesive wear and aluminum:
"Thus, it is clear that a better understanding of
adhesion, lubrication and wear will have a positive impact
on many industries and help lead to ‘greener’ manufacturing.
Unfortunately the field remains dominated by Edisonian
approaches yielding short-term solutions; we believe that
there is a great need for a fundamental, atomic-scale study of
the critical mechanisms and processes involved in adhesion,
lubrication and wear."
Adhesion: there is no simple analytical model to predict
adhesion between different materials, so we discuss
the use of electronic structure methods to investigate
adhesion between Al and various ceramics, to determine
the factors that control adhesion.
