Not sure about your bump hypothesis. Somewhere I read that wood behaves like visco-elastic material. One might think of it as material that "flows" where the properties of the flow (viscosity) depends in some form or fashion on the force/speed/temperature applied. If I recall correctly the author analyzed the cutting behavior of rotary machinery (and was way to difficult for me to understand), no idea who this would would apply for linear cutters.
