Tom....I will confess that I did go about trying to find some 1/4" brass rod....but I would have to buy a whole 36" (or 48"....memory going) length....so if I find a small 6" piece somewhere/sometime, I'll replace the awl and make it more purdy....what do ex-wifes know anyway ??
