I think the standard has been to do as good as job with the plane as possible, then scrape and sand if necessary. Some folks sand as a matter of course in order to homogenize the surface to accept a film forming finish. Nothing wrong with it. At all.

Nothing about the "newfound" chipbreaker information changes any of this.

FW did a test a few years ago and nobody could distinguish a planed vs. a sanded surface when both were viewed under a film finish.

Of all the professional craftsman who wrote for FW in its heyday, I don't think there is/was a single one who claimed not to ever use sandpaper.
