Re: What draws you to a piece/style of furniture?

Moses Yoder
I have studied the Shakers extensively and visited the Shaker village at Pleasant Hill about 20 years ago on my honeymoon. The history behind their furniture interests me, and the philosophy of not have any wasted adornment appeals to me because of my simple Amish upbringing. When I met the first of Krenov's books he talked about using the subtle beauty of the wood as decoration for the object, and then it all made sense.

I think if I applied myself I could learn to make Chippendale furniture fairly easily with a little bit of carving here and there, but a big part of me wonders why I would want to spend my time carving things onto the wood that aren't really meant to be there.
