Yes they believe in the single iron plane and will defend that choice. So the article highlights the disadvatages of the capiron. So in that sence it's an advertorial.
My take in all this are the other millions of handplanes around. These are mostly with capiron so it makes sence to makes the use of the capiron better known to the public.
Re: thick shavings. I think a .2mm shaving combines fine with about .3 to .4 mm capiron setting. Such thick shavings are not entirely tearout free for me but it's never really deep. And i don't know about the super thin ones. Tearout isn't much of an issue with them anyway.
