Bill Tindall
Mark has correctly addressed the issue as teaching, and well said it was.
The Kato-Kawai video is about teaching something, not discovering it. I will say for the third time, for some still don't seem to have read or understood, the Kato-Kawia video was prepared for teaching. Again, for the third time, there is nothing in the Kato-Kawai papers that suggests that the cap iron effect was not well known before their work, which is focused on edge life and self sharpening. No where do they claim, nor has anyone else claimed except their detractors, that they discovered that a cap iron mitigated tear-out.
Hence, the only relevant criticism of the video is whether it is effective at teaching what a cap iron does, how it does it and about where to set it. I might add that the Kees video must be judged by the same criteria, is it effective at teaching. To this end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ie the student. If you want to be positive spread the word about these videos. Or if you feel they are lacking make you own, or teach a class(as Mark does) or write a book or article.
