Hand Tools Archive

There have been too many countervoices on the Internet over the last years. For example when you do a search on the popular woodworking site for chipbreaker, you won't find a single positive article about it. Only negative stuff. Then there is the article on your (Larry) page, which is completely dismissive about the practical use of the chipbreaker. And that article has been linked to a lot. The slide you show from your slideshow, Larry, also emphasises the impracticality of using the chipbreaker outside the labaratory.
All that negative vibe wasn't helping the average home woodworker to interpret these single sentence messages from the handbooks in the right manner. Lucky them who learned handplaning in a more humble environment.
Now we know that using the chipbreaker is a VERY PRACTICAL way of improving the capabilities of all the cheap and abundant double iron planes in the world, we need to turn that negative vibe into a possitive one. I mean, when even I can use the chipbreaker to great effect with dirt cheap planes, tuned up in my garden shed, then everybody can do it.
So Larry, please revise that article on your website. Stop talking about the 1 thou setting of the chipbreaker, which is too close in most circumstances anyway. And OPEN the mouth of the plane so you don't have so much trouble with clogging.
Thanks.
