I saw that bit of info on a Chris Schwarz video on marking knives on the Popular Woodworking site. Not sure how it works or why but he marked out his level with a marking knife and then as long as he was getting the full length shavings he wasn’t down to the line. When he noticed that the edges were ragged, he knew he was close to his line.
