Of course, the single iron high angle plane is also a valid approach to the goal of reducing tearout. It works too. Just look around in the Versailles to see what kind of furniture they could make with single iron planes.
But is it better?
It certainly is simpler to cycle like Tom wrote. It might not clog as easilly. But I kind of doubt the latter, because the shavings are so straight when the chipbreaker is in the sweet spot.
Old street tools make beautifull planes in high quality and they do work. So you won't buy a dud.
And how about Japanese planes? They tame the tearout with solid bedding, tight mouth and that special shaped sole to get pressure where it's needed. That's valid too, obviously.
