From the force data in Kato and Kawai's paper it should be possible to calculate the downward force provided by the cap iron vs. a pressure bar(plane mouth) ahead of the blade tip. For a wood with a stiff shaving I would not be surprised to learn that the cap iron provides way more force on the forming shaving than the sole of a plane can provide.
