Bill, I don`t think the logic is there. He was writing for others, a lot more goes unsaid than said. There are people on the boards who went to CR when he was active, who might be able to say more. Well you have access to Fink. I will look at the tape I have, but he does not say enough directly. Setting is one thing, if the point is a lot of tuning probably correct.
The other factor is that the modern players are far more into planing than ever before. The Japanese planes were an astonishment to most when they first were seen. Now Rob Cosman has some ad on Youtube where one of those Chinese made planes he reps is taking a very beautiful shaving. Nobody was doing that in general work in the west. Standards are way up.
