Just an FYI more than anything...

Planecraft...Record's educational advertisement book that has been in print since 1934 has the following info on page 41 (from the Chapter 4: Adjustment of the Plane:
For rough work Cap iron 1/32 in to 1/16in from edge
For finishing work Cap iron 1/64 from edge
For hard woods with irregular grain cap iron as close as you can get it to cutting edge.
