Bill, you will see a difference with that kind of surface, there will be more depth to the hand planed surface even with finish on it.

However, it's unlikely that anyone else who is not a woodworker will notice.

If you have some scrap cherry around, give it a rip vs a surface run up to 220 or 320 grit.
