I had a supervisor that was a sticker for language to the point that he could be annoying. One day he said "it is important to speak correctly to think correctly". The comment was in relation to someone calling something by an incorrect name relative to its function. The wisdom of his comment stuck in my mind.
This thought keeps coming up relative to the thing that deflects shavings. When working correctly it most certainly doesn't break chips nor is its proper function to break chips. "Chip breaker" is misleading in terms of function. "Cap iron" or "double iron" doesn't provide any clue as to its important function, but at least it isn't a misleading name.
