There is this myth, that enters the field mostly with the Stanley type tripe, that the breaker's main purpose is not related to the cut, but as a base for adjustment, or a means of stiffening those thin blades. But breakers have been around for a long time, pre those needs. They only work if in some proximity to the edge. And with planes like the Japanese ones, you can make adjustments cut by cut on the fly. It takes studies to light the fuse for some people. But that is more a mater of their learning style than anything else.
