Knowledge is good, applying knowledge is gooder. The study gave us some hard information about a [necessarily] limited situation. It appears [to me] that it might have applications to a problem I've been having: getting better results from old Stanley planes. Does it? I think so but don't have the rigor to say so. Did I learn anything new [about Stanley's]? Not really, I mostly duplicated what has been covered in books and people like Warren. On the other hand, I got a much better understanding of what is happening and planes that work. That is priceless.
Like many studies (eg in Nature), the results are not directly applicable to MY work, but the ideas are.
Regarding regrinding the cap iron - the Stanley is already pretty close to what video shows, and yes, I did put a micro flat on mine.
Cutting off the leading part of the sole - yep, tried it (in a fashion); I used a gapping mouth (1/16" & 1/8") with and without chip benders, the bender made a huge difference when the grain didn't behave.
