I have been very sceptical about the use of the capiron too to avoid tear out. I was getting very good results with a backbevel on my Stanley #4.
But because of you I have been experimenting more and more with the capiron and am getting slowly better at it. It works definitely, just takes some more skill. I have removed the backbevel months ago and don't plan on returning to it anytime soon.
I have a big project coming up, making a dining room table from two walnut slabs. That's going to be an handtool project, because the slabs are way too big for my powered jointer and thicknesser. Nice opportunity to test the theory in a real life situation.
