I have included a picture of the Supersurfacer blade and back-knife (chipbreaker) setting gauge, so that you can see how important it is to precisely set the distance of the back-knife to the cutting edge of the knife. as you can see they are set with micrometers. The cutting knife is on the bottom and the back-knife is on top. You will also note that both the knife and back-knife have laminated tips. The offset is varied depending on the shaving size and the hardness of the wood. Also the skew angle is adjusted for different species.
