For someone who is coming from a power-tool environment, it's quite possible that they have a jointer/tablesaw/bandsaw but no chisels/floats.

It's also the whole "workmanship of risk" thing. When preparing a laminated plane on power tools it's straightforward to obtain a flat bed and mouth perpendicular to the sole. With a traditional plane this requires hand tool skills.
