Woods like poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), or Butternut (Juglans cinerea) or white pine can have grain reversals or figure, but scuff or cloud a bit if the cap is too close. Walnut, cherry and Honduras mahogany can have difficult grain, but probably do a little better if the distance is not extremely close. I tend to set the iron by instinct and make an adjustment if I don't like how things are working out.
