Bill,
I always understood that close was best for fine finishing of difficult timber.
The Japanese research on the web, about the fixed blade planing machine, suggested very close indeed.
I have a slightly cambered front edge on my chipbreaker so I can set is as close as I dare.
Things work well but I regret I have done no meaningful comparisons.
