About five years ago someone posted a link to some Japanese videos. I nosed around the site a little and found diagrams of three different planes with measurements. The text was in Japanese. The site is no longer available but here is a rough idea of the measurements to the sub blade (cap iron).

#1 medium mouth, distance to sub blade: .8 to 1.5 mm

#2 small mouth, distance .5 to 1.0 mm

#3 smaller mouth, distance .3 to .6 mm

As you can see, for each plane there is quite a range of settings, and the largest setting on the coarser plane is a good multiple of the smallest settings; not one size fits all.
