Subject:
Wire Edges

Steve Elliott
I've observed wire edges under greater magnification than that and was very surprised to see the how ragged the edge appears in that image. [Edit: I was mistaken about the magnification of the image Bill posted. It's in the same ballpark as the ones I've made and the raggedness of the edge is not surprising at that scale. Also, the scanning electron microscope image will give a more accurate look to the edge (meaning fewer artifacts due to the microscope) than the optical images I'm used to.]

I've found that with good lighting I can pick up traces of wire edge that cannot possibly be significant once the blade has travelled one inch through even the softest wood.

By the time the blade is worn away from both sides (as other images in the study show) the original amount of imperfection seems to matter very little.
