I think the Rex is the one you probably need. I bought 4 of the three smallest ones. He really tried to talk me out of the shorty by saying it would not be any better than the Rex turned down, and that the REX would pobably be better. I still thought it would be cute, and 5 years ago when I bought them, @, they didn't seem expensive for what they were. The smallest was in the range of a Bernzomatic. The Rex was really only materials more expensive.
Quite a few people prefer the blower based burners, but I decided that for me the venturi was safer, and easier. I think they are also supposed to be more efficient, which has several effects, one is the cost of gas, and the other is the need for tanks large enough not to cool and freeze. Also the blower ones seemed moreso for larger forges than I was making.
What I found when I wanted to make them was that basically tuning aside, the main advantage of the more optimal designs is that the jets have a longer lead. The main way people are getting that is by using victor type torch tips. The sources for those up here is about the same cost as a REX burner, which led me to cynically consider that at least some of the people making these were "taking their work home with them".
Now that I have all kinds of lathes and stuff, I assume I could deep drill such a thing, though whether the walls would be smooth enough is hard to say.
Then that tip had to be silver soldered. Which meant expensive silver, flux, and preferably an AO torch, none of which I had at the time, but all of which I now stock.
In this internet age, it is pretty much true that anything one has concluded has been shown to be false by someone else, but at least those where the parameters of my decision at one time.
