I spent a lot of time making them myself, and it was largely more expensive, and the results were worse. I probably would have done better since learning to machine and weld, the plumbing ones are pretty much a waste of time, partly because all those fittings now come from China, in my local stores, and they are appalling quality. The guy who did a lot of the work on these burners, Ron Reil, now runs Hybrids in his forge, or did, last time I looked.
