The way I do it is to just put the blade in to the level I want, then drop the sub-blade in. I keep setting the sub-blade in lower while trying a pass, when the shaving shoots straight up in the air, limp, I stop. I do think the Japanese system is superior in allowing the SB to be independently adjusted down, on the fly.
