One of the workbench books had a trap doorish part at one end of the tool well that removed for sweeping shavings out. Of course, this then puts them behind the bench...maybe no more convenient.

I've also seen pics of ramps on the ends of the tool well to facilitate sweeping shavings up and out.

But a shop vac is probably best, if you get all those Berg chisels out first so they don't get vacuumed up; they'd make a heck of a clatter going through the hose.
