Scraping is faster, more accurate and easier to control. A whole lot less time and trouble when it ocomes to set up and storage goes too.
Once you understand what`s going on with scraping you`ll find you do more of it because it`s so much easier and you get better results than with abrasives. The finished product in metal looks way cool too.
I have to agree with one of the other posts in that I don`t worry so much about if a plane is dead flat as I do the performance. Depending on the type of work you`re doing you may even find dead flat to be a hindrance. Scrub planes come to mind here.
Much of the work I`ve done tuning tools up has been correcting mistakes made by previous owners chasing unrealistic standards that they only read about and didn`t understand. As a result they turned what were perfectly useable tools into non-functioning shelf sitters.
