Re: A grinder and two stones..

The spydercos you have are well regarded everywhere. They are a strange bird in the world of stones because they're intended to be used dry and without flattening, but I know of at least one world-class (and then some) craftsman who thinks really highly of them and uses them as his regular stones.

HSS (and by that, I mean M2 or more resistant than that to abrasion) likes to have a friable abrasive, like you'd have on a grinding wheel or a softer stone. Most stones that release grit slowly, unless the grit is diamond, load with HSS or don't cut it fast enough. Just my opinion. I have two, er....three HSS planes. I sometimes sharpen them with stones (having ground them accurately so that I don't have to work a lot of metal) and the shaptons work fine, but I wouldn't want to have only HSS tools and hard stones.

high hardness A2 cryogenic steel cuts slower on a stone than something like a vintage high carbon plane iron, but it's not a problem for any modern stone to handle A2 and high carbon, regardless of the hardness. It's the true high speed steels that favor something different if you have to sharpen them all the time.

I personally don't like HSS for planes that are intended to leave a finish surface, and I don't use them unless it doesn't matter or unless I am dimensioning an infill out of cocobolo or something (which isn't often).

I'd rather avoid them until at least the time that 3v becomes popular and cheap.

The razor hones you have (i'm assuming that's what they are) could be in a range from 4000 grit all the way to probably 15000 grit, and they can wear on the surface or be used with a lather, unless they have a label or print on them that says to use them with oil. Since they don't release grit, even the 4000 stone can become a very fine polish stone with use. If you have one that says "swaty" on it, it'll be very fine. If you have one that's a yellow color and says "Frictionite" on it and american hone, olean NY, I would think about setting it aside and not using it on tools (because they are worth a lot of $$).
