try it and let us know what you find. Mortise properly (no scraping the edge), chop dovetails properly, etc, until you have an edge that you feel isn't sharp enough to do what you want it to.

Do the same thing with plane iron. Cut with it until you feel like you would sharpen it.

Then look at the two under a loupe (you won't even need to look under a loupe to see the wear on the plane iron edge, you can see it with the naked eye if the iron had a good polish at the edge to start). There may be a scratch or two on the chisel, but there will not be a pronounced wear bevel like you'd have on the plane.

So, try it, let us know. It's only as important as you want it to be because it's no more practical to know how a tool wears than it is to just have good tools that perform well for you and to like and use them. The wood doesn't know if you know why the edge will fail, and it doesn't care, so it's up to you and your curiosity to prove or disprove what I said above.

From an overall standpoint, it does matter if someone decides they want to find a super wear resistant steel to make chisels over a hand forged high carbon steel. The wear resistant steel will be a bigger nuisance to sharpen, so before someone decides they want to make a chisel with the most wear resistant steel they can find, they ought to figure out if it's abrasive or adhesive wear that's causing the chisel to feel dull after a lot of use.
