I suppose there is also the possibility that some people are doing that, but share shop related stuff due to relevance. But in general family doesn't get it. They don't have the background to like your work any more than a nail clipping you drop, "because it was yours". I'm lucky that my wife has built boats with me, and other stuff, and that she listens to me go on and on. My parents are both highly skilled, and my in-laws include an internationally known needlewoman. But it still comes down to the same point basically.
I don't know that this is a universal condition, Tom. For example, my maternal grandfather made lots of stuff, including a doll bed and child's chair for me. I always cherished the chair, still do but my thief of a sister stole it, so no photos; but the doll's bed wasn't as elegant (the chair really was) nor was I all that interested in doll playing. My paternal grandparents (grandfather was an interior house painter, his father an interior decorator, the Niedermayer Brothers in Richmond, VA) purchased a lot of hand made furniture, and convinced my parents to also purchase from the same place (Mr. Cee's in Charlottesville, VA). We'd often take the hour's drive there to pick out a piece or two. I loved these trips as well as the furniture. Loved short lessons from Mr. Cee on why he did some things the way he did.
In this process I learned by immersion to appreciate the attributes of good furniture, no major teaching efforts that I remember. So perhaps your kids have already picked up on your work without talking about it. IIRC, I never discussed this much with my parents; but I did undertake my first woodworking project at 11.
