The easiest way to mount a really strong handle is to epoxy bond it. This is not just adding a dab of glue. You want to float the tang in a socket of epoxy. This is how one adds maximum strength load take-offs to wooden structures, when there isn't much space. It is also the easiest method.

And if you have to change the handle?
