Subject:
Byrd Shelix vs. Grizzly Spiral cutters

RobRing
>Has anybody evaluated the performance difference between the Byrd Shelix jointer cutterheads vs. the Grizzly spiral cutters? The main difference seems to be the orientation of the cutter inserts - on the Byrd they are skewed at an angle for a true shearing cut while the Grizzly inserts are at 90-degrees to the jointer bed. Intuitively I'd expect the Byrd to leave a smoother surface on heavily figured wood, but I'm not sure that is the case. I'm considering either buying the Grizz 8" jointer with their spiral cutter or buying it with straight knives and upgrading to the Byrd if the performance difference substantiates it.

I appreciate any insight anyone can provide.

Thanks.
