Not Universal...

i don't have a dog in this fight and have no problem with polyurethane, even if I don't use it that much myself.

But looking around for beaumontage (sticks?), I came across a post from someone who linked their site at the bottom.

The finish is a chemical treatment of potassium dichromate and seed-lac shellac.

I have to admit that if I ever was able to make a piece of furniture as fine as that one, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to use aniline dyes and polyurethane.

(this maker does use aniline dye on other pieces that are finished with shellac - maybe I'm out of line with the dye comment!)
