"Why would you want to make something that someone else has already done?".

The implications of that comment is that the only motivation for making stuff is to satisfy creativity. While that might be the motivation of some it is certainly not the only motivation of most.

Three valid reasons:

Because it is a technical challenge to reproduce. You will find this to be the primary motivation of the Period Furniture folks

Because it is perfect for one's needs or desires
