I better understand. Still, have you considered reversing the column so that the wider portion is at the base and the taper toward the top. Fastening the top might be by way of a metal spider like café tables on the street. Not all wood, I know, but perhaps more convenient. It could also enable the table to be a turntable if that has merit in under a three foot diameter.
