Mocking things up is probably the surest way of working out design ideas.
I like the way you made the column out of four pieces of flat stock. I think I would try to keep those pieces on the thin side, like 1" or less, while having the four base pieces significantly wider.
I would also play around with ways to avoid that acute angle transition from the column to the base - I find that part of it a bit unappealing. I don't think there is a way to transition the convex curve to a straight column just above the base without it looking funny, but you could perhaps have the column go into a transition piece on top of the base to break up the flatter lines of the feet meeting the column.
