What you did depends of what size your collector is. Doing what you did COULD, depending on the manlyness of the collector slow your air movement at the machines.
A good piping system on any collector starts out with the finest dust producing machines furtherest from the collector. Largest dust particle producing machines, like a planer, closest to the collector. The piping main starts out smallest the further from the collector and increases in size the closer to the collect it gets. I have seen this conversation go on groups like this and most say put in 6" main. That just isn't the way it should be done.
My system does have a 6" main part way but 10' from collect increases to 8" pipe to start slowing the air flow so good separation takes place inside the collector (it's a cyclone, Onieda). The system works extremely well.
