Google easily found this MarthaStuart video explaining the process for covering a wire frame lampshade with paper backed veneer.

Using the same process and with a little more care, you should be able to get a more transparent shade using unbacked veneer.

I don't know how old the video is, but Constantine's closed their Brooklyn store back in the '90s.

I still have some veneers from their Sunrise, FL store in my archives. Your Woodcraft in Glen Allen should carry a good selection of backed and unbacked veneers from Sauer's.

Martha uses a tool called a bone folder, which isn't spoken of very often here on WoodCentral.

If you don't have a Tapirus bairdii femur, you could make one from boxwood or dogwood.
